This. Though I have seen badly written characters, it may not be the fault of the characters themselves. There are such thing as bland characters, characters that are too perfect, or characters that are just uninteresting. And this is true of canon characters as well, not just OCs.

It’s a writer’s job to make their characters seem believable, well rounded, and human. And we’ve all written crap characters. Be honest. Still, I dislike the term Mary Sue for the reasons listed above. It’s a cheap cop-out. If someone dislikes a character or the way a character is written, they should tell the writer why they feel that way.

Simply calling a character a “Mary Sue” just because you don’t like them doesn’t help the writer. If you’re going to give criticism, make sure you back yourself up with facts and possibly examples. Otherwise, how is the writer supposed to improve?
